  • Sarah Gude born c. 1820, died 22 Aug 1888, aged 68y

Sarah was the sister of Mary Buswell, nee Gude. She went to work as a cook in London, developed some sort of chronic illness and was one of the first patients in the British Home for Incurables at its first location at Clapham. She was admitted in 1868 and stayed there for twenty years until her death, though she actually died in Wandsworth County Lunatic Asylum. She is one of the patients listed (though none by name) in the book The Incurables Movement: an Illustrated history of the British Home by Gordon C Cook, Radcliffe Publishing Ltd, Abingdon, Oxford.  Information supplied by Jean Buswell
