Doubly-Linked Families
Brattle and Ellis
William Ellis and Eleanor Hannah Cope had 7 children. Arthur Barnabas
Brattle and Sarah Elizabeth Cormack also had 7 children.
William and Eleanor's fourth child, Emily Ellis, married Arthur and
Sarah's 2nd child, Ernest Brattle on 15th July 1899 (source: Army Pension
Records). Ernest was a soldier at the time. He had served in India for 4
years, but at the time of his marriage was in the middle of a 2 year period
of service in Britain. His parents lived less than half a mile away from the
Ellis family home.
The other marriage between the two families was between William and
Eleanor's 5th child, Henry Ellis, and Arthur and Sarah's 6th child Rebecca
Jane Brattle. This marriage took place on 30th November 1907.
Stephens and Razzell
The Stephens and Razzell family links are a little different. The first joining
of the families was the marriage of Samuel Stephens to Fruse Razzell. I've
not yet come across any indication of how Samuel and Fruse might have met.
Their eldest child, Frank Caleb Stephens, married his cousin, Eleanor
Razzell, the eldest child of Fruse's brother Alfred Razzell and Sarah Ann
Piercy. Fruse and Alfred came from a large and, apparently, close-knit
family. Alfred was the 9th child; Fruse the 11th. There is also a lovely
story of an unusual link between the 10th child, Robert Razzell, and Alfred's wife Sarah - see
Closer than Sisters.
Dolby and Razzell
George and Ann Razzell were twins, born in 1853 in Charlwood, Surrey. Ann
was the first to marry. She married John Dolby in 1872. The Dolbys lived in
Horley, about 4 miles away.
Four years later, George Razzell married Sally (Sarah) Dolby, John's
younger sister.
