John Bosworth served in the Napoleonic wars. He suffered a gunshot wound at the battle of Toulouse, subsequently having his left arm amputated.  (An article on Wikipedia gives information about The Battle of Toulouse).

John's date of birth is uncertain: one page of the discharge paper gives his age as 28, the other gives 32. The latter was originally written as 28 then amended to 32, so I have taken this date as more likely to be correct.

John made his mark, rather than signing his discharge paper. My first assumption was that he was illiterate, but it is also possible that he was left handed and unable to write with his remaining hand.
