Walter Panter

Game Trespasses, 1897

Walter Panter, shoe hand, Desborough, was brought up on a warrant, charged with a game trespass at East Carlton, on June 26.

—Defendant was further charged with similar offences at Desborough on July 21 and 29.

—Jessie Bell, a gamekeeper, proved the first offence, which defendant admitted.

—In the second case prisoner pleaded not guilty.

—Mr. P. L. Rawlins prosecuted.

—Frederick Fuller, an underkeeper, Rushton, deposed to sdeeing the defendant in company with two other men named Ginns and Woollard trespassing in search of game near to the pleasure ground at Rushton. The men had a gun and shot a rabbit, which was picked up. The man Woollard threatened witness and his companion with the gun.

—Henry Rason corroborated.

—In answer to defendant this witness admitted offering to treat him to a quart of beer at the George Hotel, but that was because he wanted to learn his name. (Laughter.)

—In the third case defendant also pleaded not guilty.

—Charles Green, a gamekeeper, of Faxton, deposed to seeing the defendant with a gun lying in a shooting position close to a cover. When the defendant saw witness he ran away and joined two other men.

—For the first offence defendant was fines £2 and 14s. 4d. costs, for the second £1 and 6s. costs, and for the third £1 and 6s. costs; total, £5 6s. 4d. In default of payment defendant was sent to prison for one month for the first case, and a week for the other cases—six weeks in all.
