Rosilla Ayres was born at Haselbech in Northamptonshire about 1878, the daughter of Ann Ayres. In 1901 she was in service in Rushton, with farmer and grazier John Willows. She married Walter in 1905.

Walter Henry Woolmer was born at Rushton about 1882, the son of George Woolmer of Rushton and his wife Sarah.

Initially Walter and Rose were living in Rushton (their daughter Gladys was born there in 1906), but by 1911 the family had moved to Desborough.
