James Martin was born in Rothwell about 1833.

About 1858 he married Ann Coe, the daughter of Samuel Coe and Ann Ginns.

Together they had eleven children. Sadly, of their six sons 2 died in infancy, 2 more under the age of 4, and a fifth, Alfred, died at 26. There is a memorial to all five sons in the churchyard.

Note: The final digit of the year of death is unclear on the monument, but the death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1902 at Kettering.
