William Cave was born about 1668. He married Jane East in 1695. Jane was baptised in 1674, the daughter of Lewis East and Ann Loake.

Several men named Lewis Cave came from Desborough, including Sir Lewis William Cave, a Judge of the Queen's Bench Division. It may be that the Christian name was introduced into the family by Jane.
