Reuben was born in Desborough, the tenth of eleven (known) children of Samuel and Sarah Coe.

He married Ann Payne about 1858. Ann was the eldest of five (known) children of Samuel Payne and Elizabeth Torrill.

Reuben was probably the Reuben Coe who was on the first committee of the Desborough Industrial & Provident Co-operative Society Ltd. A photograph appears in the society's Jubilee Souvenir.
