Samuel Bird was born at Old Leake in Lincolnshire, the son of Wright Bird of Spilsby and Ann Taylor of Winthorpe.
He married Lizzie Eva Smith in 1896. Samuel was an ironmonger and plumber; Lizzie was a teacher.
