John was born at Gloucester about 1844,  the second of eight known children of Daniel Barton, of Whittlesea in Cambridgeshire, and Jane Brown, of Syston in Leicestershire.

Daniel, as a contractor for public works, had to move his family around a great deal, as witness the birthplaces of his children: Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Westmoreland, Cheshire, Herefordshire, and in Northamptonshire: Kettering, Brixworth and Rothwell.

Emma was born about 1846 in Desborough, the sixth of seven known children of Thomas Buckby and his wife Ann, both of Desborough. Emma and John were married in 1866 and had seven known children.
