This monument has lost the upper section and is badly eroded. There
were at least two entries above that for Robert Kirtley but too little
remains to be sure what they said.
Robert Kirtley was
the fourth child of Henry
Kirtley and Ann Hutton,
baptised at Tanfield on 18th May 1834. Henry was recorded as blind in
the 1851 census. He had formerly worked as a waggon wright. Robert was
working as a labourer in 1851 whilst his younger brother Thomas at the
age of 14 was already working as a coal miner.
