George Andrews

Army & Militia Deserter, 1863, 1865, 1866

Northampton Borough Petty Sessions. Friday, May 10th.

A Double Desertion.— George Andrews, of Desborough, was brought up on remand charged with having deserted from the Grenadier Guards, in May, 1863.

— The War Office had been communicated with, but the authorities left the matter in the hands of the magistrates, as the prisoner had not been attested.

— The Bench considered there was not sufficient evidence against the prisoner, and he was discharged.

The prisoner was then charged with deserting from the Northampton and Rutland Militia, in May, 1865, and May, 1866.

— Inspector Beattie said the prisoner admitted being absent from the trainings of 1865 and 1866, but he could neither read nor write, and therefore could not make out the papers.

— The prisoner was remanded till Tuesday next.
