John and Elizabeth Marlow
Removal Order 27th October 1818
from Desborough to Ashley

County of Northampton to wit.

To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Desborough in the said County, and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Ashley in the said County of Northampton and to each and every of them.

UPON the complaint of the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of Desborough aforesaid, in the said county of Northampton aforesaid unto us, whose names are hereunto set, and seals affixed, being two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said county of Northampton and one of us of the quorum, that John Marlow and Elizabeth his Wife and their two Children viz Mary aged four years and William aged two years have come to inhabit in the said Parish of Desborough not having gained a legal settlement there, nor produced any certificate, owning them to be settled elsewhere, and that the said John Marlow Elizabeth his Wife and their said two children Mary and William have become chargeable to the said Parish of Desborough

We, the said Justices, upon due Proof made thereof, as well upon the examination of the said John Marlow upon oath, as otherwise, and likewise upon due consideration had of the premises, do adjudge the same to be true; and we do likewise adjudge, that the lawful settlement of them the said John Marlow Elizabeth his Wife and their said two children Matthew and William is in the said Parish of Ashley in the said County of Northampton

We do therefore require you the said churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Desborough or some, or one of you, to convey the said John Marlow his Wife and their said two Children Mary and William from and out of your said Parish of Desborough to the said Parish of Ashley and them to deliver to the churchwardens and overseers of the poor there, or to some, or one of them, together with this our order, or a true copy thereof; and we do also hereby require you the said churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Ashley to receive and provide for them as inhabitants of your said Parish

Given under our hands and seals the twenty seventh day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.

Notes:

Judging by the baptisms of their later children the family were either permitted to remain in Desborough or they quickly returned. See David Kidney for a documented case where this happened.
