County of Northampton to wit

To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Desborough in the said County and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Countesthorpe in the County of Leicester and to each and every of them.

UPON the Complaint of the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the Parish of Desborough aforesaid, in the said County of Northampton unto us, whose names are hereunto set, and seals affixed, being two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Northampton and one of us of the quorum, that James Marlow and Martha his wife have come to inhabit in the said Parish of Desborough not having gained a legal settlement there, nor produced any certificate, owning them to be settled elsewhere, and that the said James Marlow and Martha his Wife have become chargeable to the said Parish of Desborough

We, the said Justices, upon due Proof made thereof, as well upon the examination of the said James Marlow upon oath, as otherwise, and likewise upon due consideration had of the premises, do adjudge the same to be true; and we do likewise adjudge, that the lawful settlement of them the said James Marlow and Martha his Wife is in the said Parish of Countesthorpe in the said county of Leicester

We do therefore require you the said churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Desborough or some, or one of you, to convey the said James Marlow and Martha his Wife from and out of your said Parish of Desborough to the said Parish of Countesthorpe and them to deliver to the churchwardens and overseers of the poor there, or to some, or one of them, together with this our order, or a true copy thereof; and we do also hereby require you the said churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Countesthorpe to receive and provide for them as inhabitants of your said Parish

Given under our hands and seals the twenty ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.

Notes:

If this is attached to the correct James and Martha Marlow, they had been married less than a month at this date. Their first child, James, was baptised three weeks later, on the 19th January, and buried on the 22nd January, both at Desborough. They had a daughter, Jane, baptised at Desborough in 1822, so it looks likely that they were able to obtain a settlement certificate from Countesthorpe that enabled them to remain in Desborough. See the case of David Kidney which gives documentary evidence that this could happen.

James' parents Edward and Jane Marlow were the subject of a removal order to Rothwell in 1824

The removal order was entered on a printed form.
