Walter Robert Panter was born about 1890, the eldest son of Robert Panter, a worker in the shoe trade, and Mary Maria Cheney.

Walter enlisted for service in World War I on 3rd September 1914. He was initially assigned to the Reserve Cavalry Regiment, later being transferred to the East Surreys. He served in Europe and then in the Med. He died at Malta of a brain abscess.

His army service records give the following description:

Height: 5ft 11in
Weight: 140 lbs
Chest: 38in (fully expanded)
Complexion: Fresh
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Brown

Like many people at the time, he had bad teeth.
