Reuben Horsley

Reuben Horsley enlisted in the Army on 10th August 1914. He served in France with the Northamptonshire Regiment. In 1916 he was wounded in the thigh. He was transferred in 1918 to the Roads and Quarries Battalion of the Royal Engineers. He died on 3rd October 1918 following an accidental explosion.

His military records are unusually detailed. They are summarised here, with full transcriptions of:

• Letter from Kettering District Council. This accompanied some certificates required by the army to prove the entitlement of Horsley's family to 'separation allowance'. It shows the poverty of the family as Mrs Horsley was unable to purchase birth certificates for all their children.
  
• Death certificate of youngest child. Mildred was their youngest child. She died at 8 months from measles whilst Horsley was serving in France
  
• Several reports show how the accident occurred that resulted in Reuben Horsley's death.
